Today, February 18, marks the arrival of the Rain Water solar term. As the second solar term in the traditional 24 solar terms, Rain Water signifies the moment when the sun reaches 330 degrees of the ecliptic longitude. It also marks the gradual retreat of winter’s chill and the quiet arrival of spring. During this period, the weather begins to warm, precipitation shifts from snow to rain, and the amount of rainfall increases, bringing a vibrant and lively atmosphere to the earth.
In ancient Chinese agricultural society, the Rain Water solar term held great significance. Farmers often said, "Spring rain is as precious as oil," because abundant rainfall is crucial for the growth of crops. At this time, although the northern regions may still feel the chill of winter, the snow begins to melt; while in the southern regions, early spring has already arrived, with temperatures clearly rising, grass and trees sprouting, and the footsteps of spring drawing closer.
The ancients divided the Rain Water solar term into three phases: "First, the otters begin to catch fish; second, the wild geese return; third, plants and trees begin to sprout." These natural phenomena remind us that spring is quietly arriving.
In folk traditions, there are also some warm customs associated with the Rain Water solar term. For example, in some areas, there is a tradition of “returning to the maternal home,” where married daughters visit their parents and bring gifts to express their love and care. Additionally, people often adjust their diets to adapt to the changing climate by consuming warming foods such as honey and red dates.
Rain Water is a transitional period in nature from winter to spring, symbolizing vitality and hope. It is not only an important part of ancient Chinese agricultural culture, but also a reminder to follow the natural rhythm of life and cherish the arrival of spring. During this vibrant season, may we all feel the warmth and hope that spring brings!
