24 Solar Terms——Spring Equinox

Mar 20, 2025Byiqingdao

The Spring Equinox, the fourth solar term of the 24 Solar Terms, falls on March 20 this year. On this day, the sun shines directly on the Earth’s equator, resulting in nearly equal lengths of day and night, hence the name “Spring Equinox.” This marks the midpoint of spring, signaling that daylight hours will gradually surpass nighttime, with increasing sunlight awakening all living things.

In China, the Spring Equinox is associated with various customs and traditions. In ancient times, it was considered an important agricultural period, guiding farmers in their planting schedules. A popular saying goes, “Spring Equinox arrives, eggs perch with cheer,” referring to a traditional game where people attempt to balance eggs upright. It is believed that those who succeed will enjoy good luck throughout the year. Another common tradition is eating “spring vegetables”—fresh wild greens such as shepherd’s purse—which symbolize the arrival of spring and a wish for good health in the coming year.

The Spring Equinox is also an ideal time for outdoor activities like spring outings and flower viewing. As temperatures rise, various flowers, especially peach and apricot blossoms, come into full bloom, attracting many to venture outside and enjoy nature’s beauty. These traditions reflect people’s keen observations of nature and their aspirations for a prosperous life. By celebrating the Spring Equinox, people not only show their respect for nature but also convey their hopes for a bright and promising future.
