24 Solar Terms——Minor Cold

Jan 05, 2025

Minor Cold is the twenty-third of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms in the traditional Chinese calendar and falls on January 5th this year. This period marks an important node in winter, indicating the approach of the coldest days of the year, but also signifies a turning point in the natural cycle, hinting at the approaching spring.

During Minor Cold, most parts of China experience the coldest weather of the year, leading to a pause in agricultural activities. There's a saying that "Minor Cold surpasses Major Cold," which reflects the severity of the cold at this time. However, Minor Cold is also a season brimming with vitality and hope; ancient people believed it foretold the return of yang energy and the revival of all things.

In terms of customs, in some areas of southern China, there is a tradition of eating glutinous rice during Minor Cold, prepared with ingredients like cured meat and sausages, symbolizing warmth for the body against the cold. Hotpot with mutton is popular in the north, providing warmth and deliciousness.

Besides, activities such as plum blossom appreciation and ice fishing are enjoyed, through which people welcome the upcoming Chinese New Year and enjoy the pleasures brought by the changing seasons. Many traditional customs have been preserved and innovated with time, becoming part of modern life.
