24 Solar Terms——Minor Snow

Nov 22, 2024Byiqingdao

Minor Snow is one of the 24 solar terms in traditional Chinese culture. It typically arrives on November 22 or 23 each year and falls on Nov.22 this year. This solar term marks the official start of winter, with temperatures gradually dropping and the likelihood of snowfall increasing. The name "Minor Snow" does not imply that it will definitely snow on this day but suggests that from this day onward, the northern regions may experience their first snow.

During this time, various rich and colorful customs and traditional activities take place across China, adding to the festive atmosphere and reflecting the Chinese philosophy of living in harmony with nature.

Marinating cured meat
In the south, especially in the Jiangnan region, the period around Minor Snow is the best time for marinating cured meat. People choose fresh pork and season it with salt, Sichuan pepper, star anise, and other spices, then hang it in a well-ventilated place to dry.

Making Dumplings
In the northern regions, there is a custom of eating dumplings during Minor Snow. The shape of dumplings resembles ancient ingots, symbolizing wealth and good fortune. Family members gather to make dumplings, chat, and enjoy the warm family time. The fillings for dumplings are diverse, ranging from traditional pork and cabbage to innovative flavors like seafood and Chinese chives.

Drinking Mutton Soup
Mutton is warm in nature and suitable for winter consumption. On Minor Snow, many people enjoy a steaming bowl of mutton soup, which helps to keep them warm and replenish energy. Mutton soup often includes traditional Chinese herbs like angelica and wolfberry, enhancing its flavor and providing nourishing benefits.
