The End of Heat (Chinese: 处暑 Chǔ shǔ) is one of the 24 solar terms, usually occurring around August 23rd each year, marking the end of the summer heat and the beginning of the cooler weather. With the arrival of the End of Heat, the hot weather in most areas gradually eases, rainfall decreases, the air becomes dry, and the temperature difference between day and night increases.
On the day of the End of Heat, different regions have their own traditional customs. In northern China, the period around Chushu often coincides with the celebration of the Zhongyuan Festival, also known as the 'Ghost Festival' or 'Mid-Lantern Festival.' People typically release lanterns on rivers and let them drift, commemorating the deceased and praying for peace and safety.
In the south, especially in coastal areas, a fishing festival is held during the End of Heat. This is an important festival that marks the end of the fishing moratorium, and fishermen will hold a grand fishing opening ceremony to celebrate the day when they start fishing again, and also to pray for a good fishery harvest.
In terms of diet, it is believed that one should pay attention to a light diet and eat less greasy food after the summer heat to adapt to the effects of seasonal changes on the body.
Through these customs, we can feel people's respect for the laws of nature and their good wishes for life.
