In fact, today's Qingdao Zhongshan Road includes not only Zhongshan Road, but the area called "Shangjieli" by the natives in Qingdao.
From the German occupation period at the end of the 19th century to the time when the Qingdao municipal government moved eastward in the 1990s, the Zhongshan Road area remained the political, economic and cultural center, as well as the most prosperous commercial center of Qingdao.
In 2019, Qingdao municipal Party committee and the municipal government launched a new round of protection and renewal of the historic urban areas. This protection and renewal work focuses on Zhongshan Road and its surrounding area, covering an area of 2 square kilometers. A characteristic block and a "5A level scenic spot" with both historical and cultural heritage and dynamic and fashionable elements will be built, which is worth looking forward to.
