As a famous museum of natural science in China, Qingdao Aquarium is mainly engaged in research on the breeding and protection of rare aquatic organisms, the class-based collection and display of marine specimens, and the popularization of marine scientific knowledge. It now has five exhibition halls featuring jellyfish, marine life, whale, seal and freshwater life respectively.

The aquarium now houses more than 20,000 specimens in nearly 2,000 species, including over 15,000 invertebrate specimens in 1,100 plus species, more than 3,000 vertebrate specimens in over 700 species, and more than 2,000 seaweed specimens in over 150 species.
Qingdao Aquarium was named a national base for popular science education in 2000, a national youth science and technology education base in 2002, and a national marine awareness education base in 2012. It also won the title of "provincial civilized organization" in Shandong Province in 2018.
