We continue with our series Tides of Change. The third season takes us along China's northeastern coastline of the Bohai and Yellow Seas, focusing on environmental protection and the marine economy. Today, we go to just south of Qingdao, to Badaguan. It's known for its exotic buildings.
Just south of the coastal city of Qingdao lies Badaguan, a complex of exotic villas with a history of more than 100 years. Covering an area of 70 hectares, the complex has more than 320 scattering villas in 25 diversified styles and genres.
This symbolic Nordic-style villa is called the Princess Castle. It's said a Danish Prince instructed a Consul General in Qingdao to build it for a princess. Even though the princess has never actually visited the castle, the romantic story endures, and endows the architecture with mysterious and unique beauty. Eyeing the future, the local government started a new project in 2015, dusting off some of the villas and turning them into museums, bars, cafes and guest houses. Now the historic architectural documents become open books, allowing more people to get inside and take a trip through space and time.
